I guess I’m the only one on Oppo with a Niro? Here’s a Oppo review after 6 months of ownership.

It’s my !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and it became the family car (we have two kids, 7 and 2). It already has 20 000 Canadian kilometers (12 500 miles?) so, thanks hybrid.

My wife wanted a new car as her 2008 Versa began to age. Hybrid was in the talk because gas, obviously. I gained confidence in hybrids in recent years, so I showed her the C-max, Niro, Prius V and Prius, while retaining the vomit build-up in my mouth. She fell in love with the Niro just in pictures, and we didn’t even test drive anything else. I was OK with that. C-max is outdated, Prius is ugly and well, I like Kia/Hyundai a lot.

The Color

Kinja'd!!!

Yes, that’s an official picture from KIA for the Deep Cerulean Blue (Ocean Blue in Canadian). It looks nothing like this in reality. We wanted that teal, damn. We were not able to see one in person because at the time, if a dealer had a Niro, it was either black or white. So we went along and ordered it. Turns out that Ocean blue is a really nice metallic blue with a drop of green in it:

A New Car

It’s the first time we buy a new car. I’m a deep defender of buying used 1 or 2 years later. Am I satisfied with the new-car experience? Yes and no. The 1750$ delivery fee is outrageous and on top of that the 500$ dealer prep fee is just frustrating. You fill it with gas, remove the stickers and wipe RainX on the windshield? Yeah, I could do that. I must be a dick to car dealers because I consider all of them as crooks and bandits. On the plus side...it’s new. You’re the first to fart in the seats. Overall I think it was a good move, because she wanted a Niro now and the model was completely new and no used examples yet.

The Car, and Hybrid Stuff

The Niro is a hatchback. It’s not a crossover! It’s a FWD hatch, or a non-ugly Prius/Ioniq. It’s pefectly sized for us, a family of four. We don’t need AWD, just good Nokian tires for winter. Trunk is a bit on the small size, but we adapt. The less space we have, the less useless crap we bring.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

We know it’s a 1.6L engine with a small electric engine between it and the dual-clutch 6 speed. Total: 139hp and 195lb. It’s not fast, but the torque is there when you put it in Sport Mode. Yes, Sport Mode it has! It sharpens the throttle and holds gears, and uses the gas engine more (ironically, you can use Sport Mode to charge the battery more because of that).

I heard complains about the jerkiness of the transmission while in stop and go traffic. Yep, it’s probably there for a reason, so put it in Sport if it annoys you and it behaves like a normal auto.

Shifts are quick, and it’s not frustrating to us that are used to manuals. Ford example, we were frustrated by Ford’s DCT.

Mileage

Yes it’s that good, that it basically cut in half the gas consumption of the old Versa. In summer we had 50 MPG all day, every day. In winter it’s more like 42 MPG. It has lots of gimmicks in the center screen to look into the hybrid system, your consumption.

The Weels, and hidden Wheels

Ah! Nice alloy wheel, huh? Nope, they are hubcaps. So there’s a cheap steel wheel behind? No, a alloy wheel! Go figure (aero reasons). I removed the hubcaps for winter use. (BTW, I know it’s not the only car to do this, the oldest I can remember is the Saturn Aura. Remember the Saturn Aura?)

Interior, and New Car Suff

This was a nice update for us. The heated seats are way too hot. The heated steering wheel is niiiice. Android Auto and Apple Car Play are there. Electric folding mirrors and proximity key are cool, but you knew that. Welcome to 2017 (18). Living with it made me appreciate the interior a lot, it really feels quality. We have the EX trim, which is middle trim. The SX has all the adaptive cruise and roof...

Conclusion

I recommend it, it’s a good price for what you get, and the mileage is a big plus. I couldn’t wish for better quality. It’s perfect for what we ask it to do and it’s an overall really good package and we will keep it a long long time for sure.

You are not alone in Oppo my friend. Look what I drove to work today, it’s my wife’s car!

‘17 EX with the Advanced Tech package have been getting 44MPG over 2000 miles. We wanted to get that blue so badly but it was rare for that combination in a sea of black, silvers and reds.

I do really like it. I feel that new, it’s still a little pricy (in The US) for what you get. Does that rear floor have a ton of space underneath? It seems high.

It has small compartments. I usually forget about it. No spare tire to be found, though

I was at the launch press conference for these. They’re fairly good looking. Glad to hear it’s treating you well.

My mom got one in that color too, hers is pretty basic though. She loves it so far but totally thinks it’s a crossover....

Thanks for the review. We were shopping cars for my wife about a year ago and she wanted a hybrid; we ended up with a C-Max. Niro was too new and expensive but I was really interested in them.

Fun fact: the Aura’s wheels were actually steel, just spoked instead of what you normally see. Lighter than a conventional steel wheel, cheaper than an alloy.

But, yeah, covers over alloys are a whole thing for aero nowadays, while maintaining a lightweight wheel.

Neat, I saw one last night driving home for the first time. Some reason I thought it was a VW for a while behind it.
